Byron Riblet: Forgotten Engineering Genius

Dec. 12, 2024

RSVP

Byron Riblet: Forgotten Engineering Genius tells the riches-to-rags tale of a man who accomplished impressive engineering feats in North and South America during the early 1900s but has since been nearly forgotten.  His Spokane-based Riblet Tramway Company became the world’s leading producer of aerial tramways and ski chairlifts. However, his achievements in the mining and ski transportation industries have been incorrectly attributed to his younger brother, Royal.  Byron Riblet’s contributions to the development of early Spokane have also gone unrecognized.  He designed large railway projects, platted new additions, laid courses for the city’s first steam-driven and electric railways, and designed the waterworks that provide clean drinking water for the city to this day.  After he died in 1952, his cremated remains went unclaimed and lay in storage for nearly 70 years.  How could one of the twentieth century’s most prolific engineers rise to greatness only to be lost to time?

Jan. 09, 2025

Catholic Charities Mission is to Feed the Hungry…Heal the Hurting…Welcome the Stranger. At our core, this is what we have done throughout our 112-year history. Our 15 programs serve low income and vulnerable individuals and families in need regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. Catholic Charities provides crisis services, emergency services, shelter, housing & supportive housing, counseling, immigration services, childcare, resources for pregnant and parenting individuals, access to food, assistance to seniors and other stabilization services. CCEW has 511 staff, a $60 million annual budget and we serve over 60,000 people a year throughout the 13 counties of Eastern Washington.  We own and manage 72 apartment complexes where over 5,000 men, women and children will put their heads on Catholic Charities pillows tonight. Please find more information on all of our programs at our website www.cceasternwa.org.

Dr. Robert J. McCann, President and Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities, oversees a $60 million annual budget, 511 employees and over 6,300 volunteers. Some of Catholic Charities Eastern Washington’s programs include the House of Charity homeless shelter, St. Margaret’s Shelter, Catalyst, Senior Services, 2,600 units of Affordable Housing, Counseling, Immigration Services, Childbirth and Parenting Assistance, Parish Social Ministries, Food For All and St. Anne’s Children and Family Center. Rob has been with Catholic Charities Eastern Washington for the past 23 years. Rob holds a BA degree in American Studies and Political Science from Fairfield University, a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership and a Doctoral degree in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University.  Rob has spent his entire adult life working in Catholic social services, serving in various countries overseas for several years with Catholic Relief Services, working in the Dolores Mission in East Los Angeles with the Jesuits, and spending two years as a Jesuit Volunteer right out of college. Rob spent eight years as an appointee to the United States Catholic Conference of Bishop’s National Advisory Committee, being elected as its chair for his final two years of his tenure, where he gave regular annual reports twice a year to all the bishops and cardinals of the US as they gathered in Washington DC.  Rob currently serves on the Boards of Empire Health Foundation FIN Board, the Catholic Charities USA National Board of Trustees, Nazareth Guild, Gonzaga University School of Education Advisory Board, Spokane County Human Rights Task Force, and the Providence Community Care Ministries Board.
