Dignified Workday
May 08, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Kathy Hammonds is a Program Manager at Career Path Services, leading the Dignified Workday initiative. Kathy has worked for Career Path Services for 10 years and holds a Master’s Degree in Education. With over 25 years of experience, she has worked with underserved populations in workforce development, education, business, and community initiatives. Kathy's experience and passion for helping others make her a valuable asset to Career Path Services and the communities she serves. Launched in 2024, the Dignified Workday Program is a low-barrier employment initiative aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness and instability. The program provides meaningful job opportunities, allowing participants to earn an income, build stability, and even qualify for housing. Workers are trained, supervised, and paid to perform various services for local businesses and organizations, such as demolition, commercial cleaning, painting, street clean-up, and graffiti abatement in East Central and Downtown Spokane. Dignified Workday is an initiative that recognizes that employment is necessary for individuals to obtain stable housing, and not only supports individuals in need but also benefits the community as a whole. |

SNAP's 60 Years of Community Impact
May 22, 2025 12:00 p.m.
As Spokane County’s only Community Action Agency, SNAP has served our county’s most vulnerable neighbors for nearly 60 years. SNAP’s CEO, Julie Honekamp, will share the results ofthe agency’s Community Needs Assessment. This is a federal requirement for Community Action Agencies to ensure they are continually assessing and meeting the community’s growing needs. Community Action Agencies, such as SNAP, are required to assess the needs of our low-income community every two years and provide a plan to address the needs that are identified. Julie will share how these Community Needs Assessments have made Spokane a better place to live, both for our neighbors in need and for our entire community.

The History & Future of Public Media
Jun. 05, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Public media was created as an antidote to the “vast wasteland” of commercial media in the 1960s. The LBJ Administration, as part of its Great Society programs, created the CPB to provide Americans with public service in the form of arts, performances, science, documentaries, and news on television and radio. Now, that vision is being challenged by an administration that wants to zero out funding for public media. What does this mean for the future of journalism? What does the future hold for stations like Spokane Public Radio? |

Rotary Shark Pond Service Projects
Jun. 26, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Entrepreneurs Against Poverty (EntrAPov) connects sponsor-donors to small entrepreneurs in areas where the $US dollar goes a long way toward starting a business that lifts families out of poverty…permanently. We do this through a “pitch show” called Shark Pond. Entrepreneurs are prepared for the show by approved educational partners in Africa. Budding entrepreneurs then compete for startup funds to launch their businesses.
We have the honor of being joined by Founder Ben Davidson. Ben is joining us fresh off the heels of his Prestigious Rotary International Award, where he was recognized for his extraordinary humanitarian efforts by Rotary District 5400 Foundation Chair Ben Nelson at a special ceremony at the Juniper Hills Country Club. The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service Award is the highest service recognition given by the Rotary Foundation. This honor celebrates outstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts, with only a select few recipients chosen annually by The Rotary International Foundation. |

District 5080’s newest Rotary Club working for Refugees
Jul. 17, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Social Cohesion Program- Patrick Shagluke, President, Rotary Club Global Action for Refugees and Forced Migrants. This Rotary Club works to provide education & business advice to local refugees and supports people in refugee camps due to forced migration.
Social cohesion program, which has a project that has three major phases, including: a) DONATION: We've been collecting clothes, shoes, utilities, electronics, coughs, dishes, and any kind of thing that can help community members with basic needs. The idea started with just helping refugees resettle, but after receiving requests from seven hosting community members, we expanded it to include all community members regardless of their origin. Other old community members started bringing donations and helping as volunteers to sort them and help beneficiaries with the ride. People started to learn about Rotary, and it was from there that we enrolled 11 members in a month. b) SOCIAL INTEGRATION: Here we envision bringing hosting and stranger communities in the movement and activities that support their mental health and express the value of different cultures by discussion on the key facts of learning and support the hosting programs and resources as the process of getting out of an isolated environment. c) GLOBAL ROTARIAN REFUGEE CONVENTION: Understanding that displacement has caused a global influx of displacement and forced migration. Many young, passionate leaders were forced to flee from their respective lands due to war atrocities, and the main purpose of this convention is to mobilise refugee leaders globally. It is also going to fund refugee and forced migrant projects and activities by influencing refugee integration policies. |

Gabriel's Challenge
Aug. 14, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Kitara Johnson-Jones' son, Gabriel Fensler, died of a fentanyl overdose in March, just a day after his 24th birthday. Out of this was launched Gabriel’s Challenge, which was a 36-day community response to Spokane County’s fentanyl crisis. The challenge began Mother’s Day, May 11, and ended Father’s Day, June 15. The program invited families and neighborhoods to educate, engage, and empower. It’s about presence. It’s about prevention. It’s about coming together to support one another through intentional connection and care.
