And now for something completely different
For those of you who missed the end of last week’s meeting, this is my new friend Scapegoat, who came to visit KSPS as part of what has become an annual tradition- bringing goats to the unsuspecting to raise money for the Wishing Star Foundation. Wishing Star fosters hope, community, and lasting memories by granting wishes for children with terminal, life-threatening, or medically complicated conditions and supporting their families beyond the wish (their words.)
Over the years, hundreds of goats have visited with select friends around Spokane to support that worthwhile mission. And one Rotary 21 member has been the face, voice, and leader of this campaign – Paula Nordgaarden. It was Paula who came up with the idea of ransoming (I mean loaning out) cute little goats to people around the community, letting them hold the goat…and make a donation to send the goat to another deserving person.
Rotary 21 Board Member Dave Troyke decided to get my goat, and joined me at work for the goat-ing, along with incoming Rotary 21 Board Member Cindy Tripp (who is also Director of Community Partners and Development for Wishing Star.) I’m fairly certain, that nearly everyone at KSPS either met or pet Scapegoat during the visit.
And to complete this long story…when asked by the Wishing Star team if I’d be willing to make a donation to send Scapegoat to another temporary handler, I couldn’t think of a better person than Paula to receive the visit.
Surprisingly, it was her first goat-ing as well.
And Paula got to spend time with those who have taken her idea and kept it going and growing, to the benefit of others. Proving once again, we ARE the Community of Rotary.
"See" you on Thursday,
