Note from
President Weir

F” is for Fulfilment

In the 2007 movie, “The Bucket List”, Morgan Freeman’s character asks Jack Nicholson’s character, “Did you find joy in life? And did you help others find joy as well?”  Jack Nicholson’s character has a hard time answering those questions because he lacked fulfillment in his life. Fulfillment is something we all strive for in life, but sometimes even the wealthiest and most successful people in the world lack fulfillment.

I remember asking a very happy retired client what his formula was for a fulfilling retirement?  He said, “Kyle, that’s easy!  I spend one-third of my time having fun because that’s what retirement is all about!  One-third of my time giving back to the community that gave so much to me (he was very active in his service club).  And one-third of my time learning something new because you’re never too old to learn something new.”

I was amazed at how quickly he came up with an answer to my question.  And as I thought about his answer, I realized that Rotary perfectly fits his formula for finding fulfillment in retirement.

  1. We have a lot of fun in Rotary!
  2. We are giving back to our community and the world who has given so much to us!
  3. With our weekly programs, we are constantly learning something new!

So as we go through our “Fall in Love with Rotary” fall membership drive, please think about some of the retired people (or anyone) who you know who is looking for ways to increase their fulfillment in life. Tell them about Rotary and how much joy it brings to your life. And invite them to experience the joy of Rotary as well!  Because “F” is for “Fulfillment” and Rotary is the prescription!
