Note from
President Stokes

Happy Monday Rotary 21!

Be warned – this is a tribute column for several jobs well done – with apologies and analogies for all concerned:

The work to put on the Candidate Debates every year is similar to the ducks that float lazily on the river but are paddling as fast their webbed feet will allow.

There are a lot of moving parts to make these debates happen – reaching out to the candidates (and staff) to determine if they’re willing to join our debate stage (or Zoom Box.) That means both parties have to agree on the date, time, how many guests…

But wait, there’s more!

Keeping in touch with the candidates to make sure they are still committed to attending, collecting all of the questions for the Moderator, Moderator chooses the questions. Picking a timekeeper, keeping the time. Meeting with the candidates when they arrive (in person, or Zoom,) to go over the ground rules for the debate, collecting the questions the candidates will ask each other, making sure the moderator and timekeeper are in sync, and finally—it’s debate time.

And I’m fairly certain I’m leaving things out.
These meetings are stressful for all concerned because of the importance of making sure our Members are the best-informed voters each Election season.

So, thank you to Lars Gilberts and the Program Committee, John Driscoll - head of the Debate Subcommittee (and timekeeper,) and our Moderators – Julie Humphreys and Paul Read, who put together your questions and made great choices.

And thank you to all of the Club members who submitted questions, watched both debates, and always make Rotary 21 the place candidates want to appear.

                                 Congratulations to all,

                  Gary Stokes
