What Caused Our River to Dry Up?
![]() The Spokane River, long revered for its constant flows, went dry for 1.5 miles for the first time in recorded history this summer, creating impacts to the ecosystem and the way we think of our river. Jule will dive into the science behind the issue, including changes in the river flow over time, what may have caused this unprecedented event, and how the Spokane Riverkeeper is leading the community to understand this issue.
As Waterkeeper, Jule manages our River Science, Outreach, River Clean Ups, and Native Fish Recovery programs, with a primary focus on developing community connections with the river.
Jule has worked on water quality and nonpoint pollution in the Spokane River watershed for Spokane Riverkeeper since 2014. Although born in Oklahoma, Jule moved to Anacortes, Washington, when he was 12, where he began his lifelong love of the water and all things in it. He graduated with a B.A. in Biology from Lewis and Clark College and then went on to earn his Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Coos Bay, Oregon. Jule comes to the Spokane Riverkeeper by way of Olympia, where he helped regulate the shellfish industry for the State Department of Health. Jule is a board member and sits on the conservation committee of Spokane Falls Trout Unlimited.
